About the Trust

History of the Trust

Cumbria Waste Management Environment Trust (CWMET) was established in 1999 for purposes beneficial to the community, principally to enable efficient and effective distribution of grants arising under the Landfill Tax Credit Scheme, now known as the Landfill Communities Fund.  It is not owned by anyone but is governed by Trustees and Directors.

Cumbria Waste Management Environment Trust became a registered charity (Charity No. 1090965) on 6th March 2002

It is also a Company Limited by Guarantee (Company No. 4282827) and therefore has a Memorandum and Articles of Association as its governing document. The Company was incorporated on 6th September 2001. Since 2013 the main area of benefit is limited to a 10 mile radius of Hespin Wood and Flusco Pike Landfill sites.

CWMET is presently staffed by two part time members of staff. Grants Manager (14Hrs) and administration officer (7Hrs) staff mainly work at the end of the week particularly with emails and post being checked on Friday morning.  Administration costs are limited to 7.5% by the government.

Principal Activities

CWMET’s principal activity is acting as a grant distribution body funding projects within 10 miles of Hespin Wood (CA6 4BJ) or Flusco Pike (CA11 0JB).  Consideration may be given for projects within a 15 mile radius of these sites if there is a second fee paying site within 10 miles of the project.  Please telephone or email the office with the post code of your project for confirmation of the rules.  The grants are open to all Parish Councils, Community Groups or organisations, which are non-profit distributing bodies and not under the control of Cumberland Council or Westmorland & Furness Council. They must have a constitution that allows them to support CWMET’s objects.

CWMET receives funding through Cumbria Waste Management Ltd and Lakeland Waste Management Ltd and is a Distributive Environmental Body within the terms of the Landfill Communities Fund. CWMET is regulated by the government regulator of Environmental Bodies, Entrust who is based in Royal Leamington Spa.
