History
Cumbria Waste Management Environment Trust (CWMET) was established in 1999 for purposes beneficial to the community, principally to enable efficient and effective distribution of grants arising under the Landfill Tax Credit Scheme.

Its area of benefit covers the County of Cumbria, but could extend to other adjoining areas.

Cumbria Waste Management Environment Trust became a registered charity on 6th March 2002 (Charity Number 1090965). It is also a Company Limited by Guarantee and therefore has a Memorandum and Articles of Association as its governing document (Company Number 4282827).  The Company was incorporated on 6th September 2001.

Principal Activities
CWMET’s principal activity is acting as a grant distribution body funding projects across Cumbria. The grants are open to all Community Groups or organisations, which are non-profit distributing bodies and not under Local Authority Control.  They must have a constitution that allows them to support CWMET’s objects.

For the first seven years of its operation CWMET received funding through Cumbria Waste Management Ltd and Lakeland Waste Management Ltd.  In 2006/07 CWMET also received Landfill Tax money from Waste Recycling Group (WRG) via their Distributive Environmental Body Waste Recycling Environment Network (WREN) and in 2007/08 received Landfill Tax money from Alco Waste Management via their Distributive Environmental Body Alco Environment Trust.  The trust will continue to investigate the possibility of working along side other landfill operators to enable easier access to Landfill Tax money across the whole County.

In August 2005 CWMET were asked by Cumbria County Council to distribute Cumbria Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund (CALSF) on their behalf with the money coming from DEFRA.  Each pot of money is time limited within the year, with the projects having to apply and complete their projects by 31st March each year.

Office Base
CWMET is based within ACT – Action with Communities in Cumbria, at The Old Stables, Redhills, Penrith CA11 0DT.  The office is staffed part time so please telephone for an appointment to ensure your journey is worthwhile.  Any post can be left at ACT reception during office hours Monday to Friday or posted through the post box located on the main front door out of hours.
